The Best List I Ever Joined

email lists, free ecourse, friendly blogger, opt in gifts
Yep, they are scratching their heads.

In keeping with my last post’s theme, a list building mistake, I wanted to talk about the BEST list I ever joined.

Now I will preface this with the following statement…please don’t get your doody head face on if this is not your list! Because the bottom line is that I am on your respective list for a reason…..you got the goods or you give the goods. Either way, I’m on it because you are doing something right.

Now, back to the reason for this post. I joined this guy;s list after joining in a live webinar interview with him over at Serpd.  I was totally diggin’ everything he had to say, so I went and checked out his blog.

I liked what I saw and REALLY liked the opt in gift, so I signed up. My friends, that was 6 weeks ago and I am STILL receiving the initial opt in gift. Let me explain.

Who Is This List Genius?

Mark Thompson from StayOnSearch. Now, before you go over there and check it out…let me tell you why Marks’ was the best list I ever joined.

When I saw the opt in form it stated…Free 10 week course. What?! A 10 week course, are you kidding me? For free??? Not 12 million dollars a credit hour?!

Then I clicked on the free course tab on his homepage and was blown away with the sheer volume of information included in the course. Take a looky loo for yourself:

  • Week 1 – Strategy: Understanding Your Goals and Setting Expectations
  • Week 2 – Market Research & Analysis: Know Your Target Market Before Spending Marketing Dollars
  • Week 3 – Paid Search: Using Pay-Per-Click Strategies to Drive Relevant Traffic that Converts
  • Week 4 – Search Engine Optimization: How to Gain Free Exposure and Traffic Through SEO
  • Week 5 – Content Creation: Creating Compelling, Valuable, and Viral Content
  • Week 6 – Link Building: How to Find Quality Link Building Opportunities
  • Week 7 – Local Search: Capturing Localized Traffic to Your Website
  • Week 8 – Social Media: Build Your Brand, Drive Traffic and Form Relationships Using Social Media
  • Week 9 – Making Money: How to Monetize for Your Website or Blog
  • Week 10 – Website Analytics/Testing: Understanding Your Audience and Increase Conversions Using Web Analytics
  • Bonus – Tools of the Trade: The Internet Marketers Toolbox

So, as you can see….absolutely astounding value offered as an opt in gift. And I can tell you this…I am on week6, Link building, and I could not be more pleased with the course. I look forward to getting my weekly lesson. Actually, I would like a diploma at the conclusion!Mark, if you are reading this, then make it happen okay??? 🙂

Anyways, I know we all talk about building our lists and what we can do to entice the reader, and I think Mark has it figured out. You want your opt in gift to really be a valuable piece of information.

Mark’s course is the reason I changed my opt in gift from a free one page report, to a very valuable list building tips eBook. The value was clearly in the book and not the report I had created. Maybe I should really switch it up and make it a 10 week list building course?! Hmmm….*wheels rolling*….but I digress.

So, the typical move is to promote our own lists, but I just had to let Mark and the rest of the world know how completely impressed I am with his course and that it’s free!

Mark’s blog is loaded with amazing free content anyways and he also has created a new list building plug in called list eruption. I believe all the details of that are on his site as well.

The Bottom Line

If you have been looking for a full on course on how to do all the tasks necessary in building your blog, then I would highly suggest Mark’s course. And you know I like value and ya can’t beat free! Who says the best things in life can’t be free??!

There are genuine people out there that really do offer top notch value for free when they can. StayOnSearch.com is a great place for you to hang out if you want to hit the next level. Just make sure you come back and visit me too!! 😉

Okay, let me have it! What’s the best list you ever joined?

I would appreciate your feedback and sharing!

  • Hey Lisa,

Great post and looks like Mark will be receiving a lot of new opt-ins just from you post.

I’ll have to pass on sharing which lists I liked because they ALL started off really well sharing a lot of valuable information but the promotions quickly kicked in and were non-stop. I remember one list I signed up for a 10 week course and by week 5 that was it. No more course, just promotions. That’s a total turn off for me. One or two every once in awhile I expect but not every single darn message.

I love learning so might have to check Mark’s out as well. Thanks again.

That would have REALLY aggravated me. I can honestly say that mark’s course has been wonderful and he has not been trying to make the “sale” from the course. It’s just great content and top notch info!

I would love to know what lists you enjoy!

  • Nice share Lisa. I had not heard of him. I am going to link to a post of mine that has three lists that I have been very happy to have subscribed to.

On my way to check it out.

    Have a good day!

  • Sounds like Mark’s done it ‘right’ offering something of real value. @Steve is right, quality is not important, it’s essential. Which is why you’re out here sharing this information with your readers, because it is helpful to bloggers and worth their time. I haven’t joined a list, but I do like to have a few e-books and white papers suggestions ready, should someone else ask if I know of something worth while, so thanks for the share Lisa. FWIW.

So glad you enjoyed it Davina. And I am happy to see you here. You definitely provide quality at your 3hats place 🙂 I used to join so many lists until the spam heads would get me!! So value is what I always try to bring!!

      See you soon,

  • No “Doody Head” face here ;). Actually you sold me on checking out the content. I have visited stayonsearch quite a few times but never signed up for the mailing list. It sounds like one heck of a deal and well done quality offer.

That is the secret of a list. For my affiliate (niche) list I give away 3 eBook/reports for signing up. Within a week I give them another free ebook and have all sorts of free guides interspersed in my autoresponder series.

(I haven’t built near that volume of giveaways on SSS…at least yet)

The more value you can give the more it becomes a two way relationship and the more likely people are going to be to follow your recommendations.

Quality isn’t important…. it is essential

I am so glad you are not a doody head Steve. 🙂

I get sooo much free content form your site that it amazes me everytime! And being on your list has totally helped me learn how to monetize. It’s just getting it altogether!!

And you nailed it with the “essential” statement.

  • Back before I actually started doing my own thing online I used to sign up for lists left and right. I actually had a separate email account set up for all the lists I signed up for. Unfortunately I don’t really check it anymore. Probably should go back and look at it – thanks for reminding me about it 🙂

One of the best lists I signed up for was Eben Pagan’s. The amount of info he gave out away for free was awesome! Especially for someone like me who hadn’t really done anything on my own.

It would be interesting to go back and see how useful I find it now. I have a feeling that I would still find golden nuggets in his free info.

  • Lisa,

Thank you very much for the blog review on my course. I’m really glad you like it. I put a lot of time and effort into the course, so I’m happy to hear that you are getting real value out of it.

Instead of a diploma I was thinking of giving everyone a trophy….doesn’t that sound better? You could put it on you desk as a paperweight, haha.

Thanks again for the write up!
