An antique finish is a great way to create a home décor that reminds you of the past. An antique or vintage home finish is possible even with a small budget.

One of the best ways to create an antique home finish is to add wide-plank floors. You can make the floor of your home looks like planks by using porcelain tiles. These tiles are glazed to make them look like planks.

You can get 6 x 36 inch tiles to get a plank effect for the flooring. Stagger the joints of the planks 12 inches course to course.

Ceiling tiles and medallions

You can use PVC or foam tiles that look like metal. These tiles on the ceiling help to create an antique home finish. You can cut the tiles, trim them, and use adhesive to stick them to the ceiling. You can even get antiqued copper tiles that can help create a Victorian look.

You can get the vintage effect using modern materials. Another ceiling options to use are polyurethane medallions. Adding a medallion can help in decoration and also to hide an electrical box. You can brush a mixture of joint compound with water on the medallion before installing. This helps to create a plaster-type texture.

You can create a decorative plaster wall effect easily to get an antique finish. Add two coats of regular paints and then add coats of a faux finish. You can hold the plastic knife of the kit at an angle before applying to the wall. This ensures a uniform distribution.

Have a cloth rag to wipe off clumps on the edge of the tool. This will change the appearance of your wall giving it a real vintage appearance.

For an antique finish in your bathroom, consider getting claw-foot bathtubs. While the old tubs were heavy and not handy, you can get acrylic tubs today. These tubs create the same kind of effect as a claw-foot tub that gives a Victorian appearance.

It is lightweight and easy to install. The solid color used ensures any tiny scratches would be hid.

Moldings help to create a colonial-style vintage effect. You can get moldings with a foam body that is extruded. The coating which has acrylic plaster and fiberglass helps to keep the miters tight.

You can use a joint compound to fix the crown moldings to the ceilings. There is no idea of the nails.

An antique-style kitchen is a great idea. Not only does it help you get a vintage kitchen, but it would also have all the modern furnishings you need.

Here are some of the ways you can create an antique style kitchen by making small upgrades:

  • Display all your vintage kitchen cutlery and items in open shelves or glass front cabinets. Don’t worry if you do not have a display shelf, just arrange them all in any way that looks good. This creates an antique look to your kitchen.
  • Get vintage tablecloths, sheets, and towels. Bright red, blue, and pastels are vintage colors that can change the appearance of your kitchen.
  • A simple fix you can do is to add glass knobs or tarnished silver pulls to your antique white finish kitchen cabinets. A good way to create an antique feel.
  • Display all your aged items. You can even “distress” new items using sandpaper to give it a vintage look.
  • Have a nice blend of antique items with modern items. Eg: antique table with modern chairs.
