Stop talking about yourself!
“I am visiting London, UK,” “I am going to buy that new Porche!” and such no longer impress your Twitter followers and your other social network. I think this is also relevant to blogs, as well.

I have just read an interesting share by Morgan Abbou on Google+ about the impact of talking about yourself to your social followers.

The Google+ update is on this particular post in Brian Solis’ blog: Stop Talking About Yourself.

The facts Brian Solis presents in his blog evolve around one issue: Talking about yourself too much won’t make your followers to retweet your Twitter updates; you might even lose your followers!

So – talking about yourself in your Twitter tweets won’t give you more buzz and followers!

Here’s the cold hard truth: Talking about yourself all the time can lose you friends, both from your online and off line social network.

Nobody want to hear all the nagging, rants, rave and such all the time – they are great to let your followers know about a portion of your life, but what your followers really want is something more useful than “Darn it – I have a flat tire on my way to the airport!” What followers want is “I think this is useful because… (… and insert links here.)

Links? Yes – your followers want links! Don’t believe me? Check out these recap from what Brian Solis has found…

  • Self-referencing posts get less retweeted.
  • Tweets with links get more retweets.
  • “Please retweet” tweets are 51% retweeted.
  • News you share with your followers are likely to be retweeted.
  • Tweet about Twitter gets more retweets

Interesting, indeed!

So, here’s a recap; to get more retweets (and eventually, more Twitter followers):

Talk about the current issues more about yourself, and don’t forget to add “please retweet” and links to the source URL in your tweet.

Sounds logical… what do you think?

  • Too many people still consider Twitter as a broadcasting platform, when in-fact, it is best used as a conversation and relationship building tool (Social, duh!).

Totally agree with this article. People need to think of their twitter persona in the same way they think of themselves in the real world. Who wants to hangout with somebody that just talks about themselves??

  • Great post. I typically like to tweet interesting factoids or statistics that I think my followers would enjoy. On occasion, I promote my own blog. I actually just posted an article about another Twitter faux pas… paying for followers. Please feel free to read and comment!

  • Add value to your followers; give them a reason to keep you on their stream and look forward to your tweets. I’ve noticed the “me” tweets many times are negativity and nobody especially wants that.

This was a good and to-the-point post.
