Social Media will Make Blogs Obsolete – Eventually?

Blogs got pepper sprayed by social media?

Here’s one question for you: Are blogs dead?

A-list bloggers are still not so sure – Copyblogger, Problogger, etc. are still unsure about which sides to choose. As of for me, I observe “the sign of times” to learn whether blogs will be dead (or not.)

Blogging trends I observe:

  • If you visit Google+ and Facebook, you’ll see long posts, as long as – even longer than – blog posts.
  • Instead of publishing a blog post, people tend to micro-blog on Twitter, Facebook, etc.
  • Related to the above, people like reading short posts over longer ones – so, they visit microblogging sites, like Tumblr and Twitter.
  • Blogging dilemma: Writing too short posts won’t make yours rank well on search engines; writing too long posts bore your readers and lose ’em to… social media.
  • …and so on

If you catch my drift, all lead to… the social media. Is social media the legitimate blog site killer?

My take…

One thing for sure, blogs might end, but blogging is here to stay.

I am a blogger and I write blurbs on my Google+ and Chime.in account. I don’t really like Facebook and Twitter, though… they are too mainstream and too noisy, IMO.

However, I still have my faith in blogs (I own several blogs, so I have every reason to have my faith in my blogs!) But seriously, I think social media is a potential blogs killer, but as a bloggers, we can’t just accept the fact and give out right?

Some bloggers are transforming their blogs into something that more “trendy”: Some posts on their blogs and talk about their posts on their social networks; some transform their blogs into news blogs to appeal different set of readers; some transform their blogs into forums or a community. Others like Owen Tripp, blog about how to boost your reputation online.

There are many ways to keep up with the fundamental changes ahead, but I honestly think blogs are here to stay. What’s your opinion?
